Truth: I have let my kid eat dirt (it was one time and it was more of a little dirt disc He found on the floor) and sometimes I have to pull things out of his mouth that he picked up off the floor (like an old blueberry he found on the floor that the dog didn’t eat and I didn’t sweep up). If his pacifier fell on the ground, at home, I dusted it off and popped it back in his mouth. But I totally disinfect his toys every two weeks. It’s all about balance!
I’m a firm believer in allowing your child to build an immune system. If you overly disinfect things, you actually reduce your child’s ability to be exposed to certain bacteria and pathogens, therefore causing them to have a weaker immune system.
By no means am I telling you to allow your child to lick a gas station floor (I went a little dramatic there I know). But don’t overly sanitize. You don’t need to clean their toys every day. And don’t freak out if they eat dirt on occasion or chew on the dogs chew toy (been there). They will turn out just fine! It’s good for them to be exposed to different elements.
I know I ate my fair share of dirt when I was little. I even drank from the hose! I turned out just fine.
Disinfect toys every so often. Aim for every other week, or every week if you’re a clean freak. Don’t make it a daily thing. Especially if you keep your house decently clean. Spend more time playing with your child and making sure they stay physically safe. They grow up too fast. Wouldn’t you rather spend that hour you would disinfecting, playing with them instead?
I always said I would never be one of those moms who just stuck their kid in front of the tv or let them spend hours playing a video game. I’m still not. However I will use technology to my advantage.
I grew up in a time with no cell phones and only one tv in the house. People had pagers and made calls on land lines or pay phones. People didn’t have a tv in every room of their house. You had one in the living room and that was it. In our house, tv time was only allowed if homework was done or on weekends in the mornings. After the morning tv time was up we could either play outside or in our rooms.
Going to dinner as a family we all sat together and talked or my brother and I would eat fast, find a tree on the restaurant patio and go climb it! We didn’t have phones or video games to entertain ourselves. I want Ryder to grow up not fully relying on a tv, a cell phone or a video game to entertain himself like I did. I know it’s not logical to completely avoid this. So that’s where I feel moderation comes in.
Ryder’s so little right now that he has no interest in the tv or video games. However going to a restaurant it can be a battle to keep him entertained. He’s in a throwing phase so we can’t bring toys our we spend the entire dinner picking them up off the floor. At football games he wants to run all over the place and there’s not much space for him to do that. That’s where the cell phone comes in handy! Ryder loves to watch videos of himself. He thinks it’s so funny. What’s even better is he will sit still for a good 30 minutes watching videos of himself!
I know as he gets older the battle over the tv or phones will get worse. That’s part of growing up in a tech savvy world. But I do hope we are able to be that family I see on occasion, out to eat with no cell phones in hand, just hanging out spending time together. But for now I’ll be appreciative of cell phones and their ability to entertain my child through a short meal or and event like a football game!
Sleep training has been the hardest thing ever! When Ryder was 4 months I had him on a perfect sleep schedule. Then at 6 months he started getting bag gas that woke him up every hour at night throwing off his sleep schedule so his naps were all off during the day. At 9 months we finally saw a reduction in the night gas and he started sleeping better. He was back to his daily scheduled naps.
Now at 10 months I am training him to learn to nap in his crib. He will still sleep in his bed in our room till he’s 1 year old. It was recommended by our doctor to reduce the risk of SIDS. But naps will be in the crib since they’re short. Yesterday was day 1 of crib nap attempt. It was brutal! He fought it for an hour. Our dog Sadie was in his room the entire time. She would stick her nose trough the crib rails and whimper at him. I let him cry and would check on him every 5-10 minutes. Near the end of the hour I could see he was really starting to fade. He would doze off, then remember he was supposed to be mad and start crying again. Finally he fell asleep and he slept hard! He was snoring so loud even the dog would look up at his crib on occasion!
I feel like I achieved something by getting him to nap in his crib but I also feel like the worst mom in the world for making him cry. I keep telling myself this is a learning process for he and I, and that it’ll get better (and easier) eventually. But it’s still so heartbreaking listening to your child cry. Good luck to all you moms out there attempting sleep training! It’s not easy but you and your little one can do it!
People warned me when I had a baby I’d get no sleep. To be honest the first 6 months weren’t too bad. Ryder slept pretty good. The problems came at around 7 months when his night gas got bad. He literally woke up crying like he was in pain. The minute the gas passed he fell right back to sleep with no problem. But that gas is not fun. He was up anywhere from five minutes to an hour. And of course it happens at the worst times. Typically between 2-5am. I called his doctor and she said it could be the food he’s eating or the food I’m eating. I cut out dairy in my diet and bananas in his diet. Lactose and potassium are two things that cause gas in babies. I tried gripe water and it seemed to lessen the gas but doesn’t rid it completely. Not only was is it exhausting for me but also for him. When he woke up in the morning he had bags under his eyes. The poor thing just looked so tired and pitiful. He seemed so out of it for the first few hours till nap time. After his morning nap it’s like he was back to normal! I hate that he had these gas problems. He’s now 9 months and it does seem to be affecting him anymore. Maybe it’s just something he had to outgrow or his body may have needed time to just make its digestive process stronger. Who knows but I’m glad it’s over! I hated seeing him hurt!
Every baby is different and will respond differently to foods. However there are several foods that are typical in causing gas. The reason is because they break down slowly in our bodies. Here are a few on that list:
Don’t completely cut these out of your baby’s diet. Some of these are extremely beneficial to your baby’s growth and overall health. If your baby has gas problems, try introducing one every week or every two weeks and stick with feeding them that one rather than do a few at a time. Your baby needs time to build a tolerance. If you have questions or issues make sure to ask your doctor. I always make sure to blaze my doctor with a million questions. Better safe than sorry! (God love her for tolerating me😂)
Starting the morning with a little avocado. It’s one of my favorite foods. I actually throw a little salt and pepper on it and eat it plain sometimes! Today I’ll put it on top of my eggs.

Avocados are SO healthy for babies too! 1/2 an avocado can meet 100% of their folate need, and 86% of their vitamin B6 need. Being a complete source of protein, it has the 10 essential amino acids a baby needs from food and also has minerals like potassium and magnesium. (Note: it’s recommended that babies are fed avocado purée only after 6 months old)
I’m really particular about what I give ryder. I’m not big on medications unless absolutely necessary. I feel now days doctors are so quick to prescribe something to people. I am so grateful I found Ryder’s doctor because she is a big advocate of building your immune system and making it work before just taking something to fix it. These are three items she recommended for us. One is a multivitamin. It’s made by Upspring. It’s a multivitamin plus iron. Most people don’t get all the supplements they need from their food alone. By 4 months babies need iron to help their bodies produce hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein that carries oxygen to all cells in the body.
The next item is a roll on essential oil by Oilogic. Ryder got a stuffy nose during the winter months and it made it hard for him to breathe at night. I would roll this on the back of his neck and the vapors helped clear his nasal passage so he could breathe better at night.
The third item is a night time gripe water by Mommy’s Bliss. Ryder gets really bad gas and it would wake him up at night. He actually would wake up crying like he was in pain. The gripe water helps with digestion therefore eliminating some of the gas caused by breast milk and food. I’ve tried 3 different kinds of gripe water with him and this is the one that worked best!
